Review: Pixel Ripped 1978 (Quest 2)

If you're reading this on my blog, then you're likely aware of my profound love for retro games. But I still love new games too. And new games that play off of my nostalgia for retro games, when done right, are some of my favorites. One stellar example that immediately comes to mind is the original Retro Game Challenge on the Nintendo DS. This gem transports players to the 80s, where they embark on a series of brand-new games meticulously designed to emulate the spirit of that era. These "new old games" not only evoke the essence of playing timeless classics but also offer tighter controls and a fairer gameplay experience than what we might recall from those early days. Retro Game Challenge goes beyond mere visual emulation, as it ingeniously captures the essence of gaming in the 80s, from the nostalgic scenes of characters sitting on the carpet in front of the TV to the need to scour the latest gaming magazine for invaluable tips and tricks. It successfully rekindles that cherished childhood gaming sensation.

Atari 50: the best retro collection

As a retro gaming enthusiast, I've really been enjoying the sheer volume of retro gaming collections that have been coming out these past few years. Some of my favorites have been the Disney Afternoon Collection, the Castlevania Collection (complete with the first official translation of the Famicom Kid Dracula game!), and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Cowabunga Collection. The Cowabunga Collection came out last Summer, and at the time I considered it to be the…

Catching up on Let's Go Retro!

This will just be a video dump of the recent Let's Go Retro! episodes as of late. To get in the Christmas spirit I played some Home Alone for SNES (3 parts) and NES: [youtube=://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJhi5yPIjtM&w=854&h=480] [youtube=://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGsNffWi1fo&w=854&h=480] [youtube=://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqXoKVOCy58&w=854&h=480] [youtube=://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1UA5f09PLk&w=854&h=480] Then that was followed up with some E.T. on the Atari 2600: [youtube=://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZ5A5PqCygU&w=854&h=480] And then finally Battletoads on the NES: [youtube=://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guk2OoxBFDE&w=854&h=480] [youtube=://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9W2uyC0NIH0&w=854&h=480] The new "let's play"-style of videos are certainly much easier and faster to record, so…

Adventure's Easter Egg

I had a lot of Atari 2600 games as a kid, and most of them, even the bad ones, got plenty of play time from me. But one of my all-time favorite games to play on Atari was always Adventure, a game that I still enjoy playing some 25 years later. For those that aren't familiar, Adventure was creator Warren Robinett's attempt at bringing PC text adventure-style games over to the Atari console. The game…

New (Old) games!

Ah, summer vacation! Hopefully I'll be able to get more blogging done, not to mention some new videos uploaded, I've got so many old games to play and talk about, especially after my latest retro gaming spree! A few weeks ago I went to video game convention that's not too far from my home, called Too Many Games, where there were so many retro and import games that I went a little crazy! Some people…

Let's Go Retro! - Ghost Manor

It's time for another Let's Go Retro! This time I visited a little-known game called Ghost Manor. It featured four levels and a frustrating Dracula boss that just...walks towards you. This video was pretty fun to make, I decided to get a little silly with the ending, acting like playing an old game was like going back to an old flame. I'm looking forward to the next Let's Go Retro! video, though I may go…
